How It Happens:
A large amount of air is blown out from a continent and only absorbs water vapor
until it reaches the ocean surface far from land, generating continuous
precipitation.
Damage It Can Cause:
Floods of biblical proportion can cause homes to be washed away along with cattle of
any sort, and entire villages can be wiped out along with the people that live
there.
Other Information:
Lightning strikes around 500,000 times during some monsoons.
Monsoons can range from minor dust storms to violent thunderstorms.
Emergency Preparation Plan:
In the event of a monsoon, have a kit prepared prior to the disaster itself, containing first aid supplies, unspoilable food and water, and a radio to possibly find out more about what is going on. It is also highly recommended to move to higher ground, as flooding is the biggest risk in a monsoon. However, lightning also a danger, so stay away from potential conductors.
